MSP raises NHS Tayside Hospital Pharmacist Vacancies with Health Secretary

Marlyn Glen is asking Health Secretary Nicola Sturgeon what action the Scottish Government is taking to help NHS Tayside fill the vacancies for hospital pharmacists in the health board area.

Information sent to Ms. Glen by the Chief Nursing Officer Directorate for NHS Scotland shows that there are currently 10 vacancies for hospital pharmacists in Tayside, while the health board employs 72 pharmacists. (both of these are headcount figures)

Ms. Glen said,

"Pharmacy plays a key role in the healthcare associated infection (HAI) control .

"The monitoring of patterns in antibiotic prescribing is of major importance for the reduction of C difficile and other HAIs."

In another development, Ms Glen has welcomed news from the Directorate that NHS Tayside has acquired new technology that can enable the use of a new rapid technique to diagnosis C difficile.

Information sent to her from the Chief Nursing Officer Directorate of NHS Scotland has confirmed that the microbiology department in Ninewells Hospital has acquired a Cepheid PCR machine for various uses across the laboratory including the positive C difficile confirmation.

Welcoming the news, Ms Glen said,

" Success against C difficile requires strong infection control regimes which includes rapid diagnosis by new techniques such as this."

The number of hospital pharmacists in NHS Tayside and the number of vacancies is :

Head count = 72; Whole Time Equivalent (WTE) = 59.9

Vacancies Head count 10 = WTE = 8.7
