Marlyn Glen has been informed by NHS Tayside that there are currently over 1,700 patients in Dundee and Angus on waiting lists for physiotherapy .
At the same time, Scottish Government figures indicate that the number of physiotherapy posts in NHS Tayside fell by 10 last year.
In addition, a Parliamentary Question raised by Ms. Glen revealed that there are over 700 on a separate list waiting to see a podiatrist ( 400 in Dundee and 317 in Angus as at October 2010)
Scottish Government statistics show that the number of podiatrists in NHS Tayside has fallen by 3 in the last year.
At the end of last December in Dundee and Angus there were :
1,635 waiting for musculoskeletal outpatient treatment ; 853 in Dundee and 782 in Angus
29 waiting for treatment at Physiotherapy Continence clinics ; 11 in Dundee and 18 in Angus
In addition to this, 37 patients are waiting for the physiotherapy bladder and bowel clinic which is held within Dundee but includes patients from across Tayside.
A new service - Paediatric Continence clinics has a small number of patients ( less than 5) waiting for this service.
104 are waiting on Pulmonary Rehabilitation treatment ; 27 in Dundee and 77 in Angus.
Ms. Glen commented,
"NHS Tayside’s budget has been put under prodigious pressure by the SNP Government to make £30 million cuts in spending .
"This has already had a detrimental impact on staffing levels in such essential services as physiotherapy and podiatry."
This year the health board received an increase in spending of £12 million, but found that its costs had risen by £42 million, leaving them with a £30 million funding gap to abolish.
